Title: Upgrading from 5.5 to 6.0beta3 or just update the Samba rpm?
Post by: AndyJ on February 26, 2004, 05:28:19 PM
We've been using SME 5.5 for about the last two years and it's been great.  It sits in the internal network and acts as as the PDC, DHCP, and Gateway.  It is behind a firewall (and not acting as one) so security isn't a big issue.  It also acts as a SourceSafe server (shared hard-drive, really) and runs a nightly backup of users data (via a script that smbmounts the users's data shares).

I'm having trouble mounting (smbmount) certain XP machines on the server with the version of Samba included in SME 5.5.  This isn't a domain login issue as all the machines log into the domain without problem and see all their assigned server shares.  It's just that on some machines it doesn't work the other way around (mounting Windows XP machines on the server).  This is a samba issue (not necessarily an SME issue).  I understand the latest version of Samba deals with XP machines much more easily.  Here are my questions?

1.  I don't want to have to upgrade if I don't have to since if it ain't broke. . . .  Can I just install the latest Samba rpm (will that work?)

2.  Should I just bite the bullet and upgrade to SME 6.0beta3.  I have heard it recommended that when upgrading it's best to start from scratch.  I could do that, but would rather let SME do some of the work so I don't have to re-add users and i-bays and the like (I don't use roaming profiles [am aware of bug in turning off roaming profiles in SME 5.5]).  I don't mind going through the issues of detaching machines from the domain and readding them (we only have about 10 machines).  Will upgrading port over all my old settings (such as cron jobs added from the SME templates)?

Whatdya think?

If you're unsure, use Norton Ghost to copy your existing setup & experiment away!  Then you can always restore to a known-good SME before trying again.  Personally, having been bitten badly by a 5.5-to-6.0b3 direct upgrade, I'd most likely go 5.5->5.6->6.0final.
