Title: sme 6 domain controller problems
Post by: sme on March 01, 2004, 03:50:03 PM
A fresh install of sme 6.0 set as domain controller. Why is it that I cannot join my WinXP Pro SP1 workstations without messing about with manual settings? Currently I have to do this to get my workstations to join the domain...

(1) manually creating a machine account on SME 6.0 server console.
(2) attempt to join domain from fresh install of XP Pro with SP1. Fails with unknown user when I use admin to try and add.
(3) rename the XP machine
(4) manually create machine account with new machine name
(5) join domain using admin account

One strange side-effect is that my XP boxes still show the old machine name even after appliying the new name with a reboot, although they respond to their new given machine names.

Once all this is done the XP boxes work fine logging onto the domain with roaming profiles. Surely SME 6.0 should automatically create machine account when one tries to join the domain? Or am I expecting too much?

will an upgrade to samba 3 make any difference to this? Its an embarrassing hassle to have to manually create machine accounts every time I want to join one to the domain.

in the Samba folder under resouces there is a reg file for XP that will fix your problem. just run it on the XP clients
