I grabbed some ssl library error from /var/log/httpd/error log trying to access port 465 on a 6.0 box. Don't know if client is faulty.
[Fri Mar 5 09:00:49 2004] [error] mod_ssl: SSL handshake failed (server intern.de:443, client 192.168.1.87) (OpenSSL library error follows)
[Fri Mar 5 09:00:49 2004] [error] OpenSSL: error:1407609B:lib(20):func(118):reason(155)
6.0, server gateway mode.

The error you report is from port 443, not port 465.
Unless you've installed a contrib, there's nothing listening on port 465 (ssmtp) on the server.

I should better pay attention to what exactly i write.
Of course it is port 443 and of i've installed the securemail contrib
I wrote that trying to figure out why i cannot SMTP over SSL on port 465 with Thunderbird 0.5.
