Hi, I hope you can help!
I did a stupid thing. I was chmodding files in a directory but I typed in the wrong commando. Now all the files and directories in the root directory (/)changed.
Now the server doesn't even startup anymore. It gives the error message:
"Starting Syslog unable to run /usr/local/bin/multilog: access denied".
Then it continiously gives the errormessage;
"setuidgid: fatal: unable to run /usr/local/bin/multilog: access denied"
The emergency boot disk doesn't work either.
The server disk contains lots of important data so I hope I can rescue that.
I'm running SME 6.0 final
Please help

There may be a simpler method, but you could always boot from a Knoppix CD and reset the permissions manually.

trie to press ALT+F2 to switch to a different shell. Since it's trying to start up the log deamons, it should work and you should be able to login.
After that start copying.

Thanks for your quick response. I will try both methods

Hi,
Alt-F2 works. I can't fix it because I don't know where things go wrong. I can see the data so I can copy it. How can I copy my mail and mysql data?
Thanks,
Rien

I think it's easier to fix the permissions of those files and start up normaly.
Try that first.
If that doesn't work you have to dump all the sql data and just save that to whatever place you like.
Later on you can reimport them. Same aplies to mail, just go to your userfolders and copy them.

try to do an "update" to 6.0.
maybe this will fix your permissions-problem...
cheers

Hi,
I tried to upgrade 6.0 but that didn't work. I've tried to fix the permissions by comparise the permissions on the server with the permissions on my testserver. But that also didn't work.
I can copy the data in directories to another server but..
I CAN'T START MYSQL.
When I try that it gives the error:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
WHAT TO DO?????
Thanks for your help
