Title: User Manager Access from Internet?
Post by: santiagon on March 21, 2004, 06:30:22 PM
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to make the User-Manager panels available from the outside world without the need for the SSH tunnel?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This may not be perfect, but it works for me...

If you add a host or network in the Remote Access panel, you can access the User-Manager as well.

With my settings for remote access, I can only use SSL (a good thing).

I am very interessted in this too. Having af few external users on my server I would like to offer them a chance to edit their passwords and vacation settings from their own external computers. Not all of the users are that capable with a keyboard (read a computer) Therefore it would be nice with an easy way fore them to access the user panel.

I have tried the howto at www.dungog.net on a 6.0 server just to test it out through a ssh connection. But I cannot seem to get it working. I establish the ssh connection just fine. But the surgested setup of putty does not seem to foreward port 980 as it is supposed to do. The result is that I cannot view http://localhost:980/user-manager in my browser.

Best regards
Carsten

Do you want to try VPN?
After logon to VPN, they will be able access https://servername/user-manager

Ofcause VPN will solve the problem of accessing the user-manager. However it does not solve the "being easy to find out" issue. If you could just type: https://domain.com/user-manager it would be easy.

Have you tried reading the manual ?

1) Allow user to have VPN access in server manager
2) Create conection (icon) link in Network and Dial-up Connections (in Win2K), use www.yourserverdomain as the host
3) log on to the workstation using the same user name that you wish to use on the sme server (this is important as your windows box passes this information to the sme server) and is used for access rights on the sem server
4) Double click on the VPN icon, enter your VPN user name and password (same as is on the sme server) and a few seconds later you should have established a VPN conection.

All the above assumes your server and router and ISP are all set correctly to allow VPN connections.

Hi There,

thanks for the reply.  I will try that, I got involved with openvpn and I thought you were talking about that.  Well, if this works OK, then, I don't need OPenVPN...

best regards

Ray
If using windows machines they must ensure that they are using 128 bit encryption as well, else the sme server will not allow  a connection if i remember it comes up has a 633 error correct me if i are wrong.

ps do a google for windows 128 bit encryption.

All 'modern" versions of browsers use 128 bit encryption.
If you are still using Windows 98 you do need to install the DUN 1.4 update to get this functionality, otherwise Win2k (updated) & Win XP should be OK. There were some issues with Win XP SP1 that affeted VPN, so that should be updated if you are having trouble.

If you are still running sme 5.6 you should have applied the latest Mitel update 6 that resolved some VPN issues.
