Title: email, server connection OK, but no http access -suggestions

From each workstation I can check my internet email OK,and Ican connect to the internet from my server, using the "check internet connection"... My problem is I cannot access the internet from any workstation.  I've tried the proxy settings, still no good.  I get a "connection not allowed" error or something like that.  This is an xp and w2k network running 6.0 on the server.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Just an idea, have you entered an ip address for gateway and dns on your workstations?      Use the ip address of the sme server.

PS: proxy settings in IE are unlikely to be required if your box is installed as a gateway.

Just a thought - you are letting your server serve DHCP and local DNS, right ?

One more thing. If you gateway is behind a proxy, don't forget to provide the outside proxy information when configuring your connection.

yep all those settings have been checked and done, both with and without proxy...  it seems like some port or ports are not open.  when checking the squid log, it's empty....
I did notice under the services tab in service manager (using the services rpm add-on) that masq is not active... must this be active to use the internet? If so, why is it not active from the install?  Sorry, just not very familiar with linux...

Not enough info to pin down the problem. It may be faster for you to re-install your box (using a spare drive perhaps) and get it working before your customise...  Then add contrib one by one, and check for problems. good luck, chris

A couple of days prior I upgraded from 5.6 latest updates to 6. Everything worked fine except horde which I was expecting and is documented elsewhere.

On the day we lost connection the server worked fine for the first 5 hours of the work day and then suddenly no http.

I was very busy but I cleared the squid cache and restarted it, and generally poked and proded. My server had httpd - and I was looking for a clue using lynx. I found that squid was complaining of having no input - I cant remember the exact message but it was saying that the input side to squid was timing out. I dont recall wether masq was running or not but I restarted it. I also restarted squid and it would die with errors in the log about a signal 6. Googling for this using lynx proved more than I could take after a long working day.

After about 3 days and work pressures, late one nite I backed up and put on 601-01 and we have been fine since.

Yes I took the cowards way out - I needed that damn server working NOW! Just like my clients do

YES, masq must be on, it is the firewall and this is what controls the direction of the data flowing through the server....
