Hi All,
I usually try not to ask for help and work these things out myself, but this time I am really stuck.
I am trying to install a SONY AIT IDE Tape drive in SME 6.01. In the startup log it appears as an SDX-520C? I dont think this is the right model (it very remote to me at the moment) and seems to get setup on /dev/hdd.
hdd: SONY SDX-520C, ATAPI TAPE drive
hdd: attached ide-scsi driver.
scsi2 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
hdd: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
hdd: DMA disabled
ide-scsi: Strange, packet command initiated yet DRQ isn't asserted
hdd: ATAPI reset complete
I have tried linking st0 > /dev/hdd
I have put "append hdd=ide-sci" in lilo
heres lilo
append=" hdd=ide-scsi"
prompt
timeout=50
default=SMEServer-up
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/sme_server.pcx
linear
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-18.7smp
label=SMEServer-smp
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-18.7smp.img
read-only
root=/dev/sda3
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-18.7
label=SMEServer-up
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-18.7.img
read-only
root=/dev/sda3
No matter what I do I cant detect the drive with software. I have Arkeia installed with Shad Lord's RPM.
I am really stuck here guys and I would really appreciate a hand if someone has the time.
Am I missing a driver? some other form of support?
heres lsmod

hi,
"I am trying to install a SONY AIT IDE Tape drive in SME 6.01. In the... "
what's the actual model of the drive that you are trying to install ?
-
If your really stuck, here is an idea..although not an answer to your question [sorry :( ]:
Install the IDE tape in an XP or 2k Pro box. If no SME PDC domain, turn it on on in server-manager and add the 2k/XP box to the domain (read the posts for this). Don't forget to create the root samba user with root password.
On SME configure samba smb.conf to share /home/e-smith/files (call this share smefiles)
Login on XP/2k as root in the domain.
Click: start/run: \\smeserver\smefiles This should give you access to the sme server file structure from /home/e-smith/files and all sub directories.
Use MS backup to backup this directory or select directories. This will allow you to restore select files on SME.
Use this inaddition to the backup to desktop.
Consider this an option to be able to backup all user data/email and have the ability to restore select files or folders from tape.

I have used a Sony AIT IDE drive under 5.6, and it was detected and worked (is working) fine.

Sorry I know this is not solving your problem but I thought it worth the mention.
I have been using the IOMEGA REV Drive 35/90 Internal ATAPI. The best backup software I have ever used on Linux servers is Backup Edge by Microlite. It works with just about every form of backup device and works incredibly well with the IOMEGA REV drives.
The REV drives are 10X Faster that an SCSI DDS-4 and work out to be just over half their cost to buy. Backup Edge is cheap to purchase if you are a non-profit organisation or for personal use. If you are a business then the full version is still reasonable especially as it has full disaster recovery and creates bootable media.
You can buy a REV drive and Backup Edge for less that a SCSI DDS-3 or 4 drive.
Backups are one of the most important things that has to be done right so a few dollas put towards some excellent software is well worth the effort. Don't scrimp and save on your backups get a good solution and software it is worth it in the long run.
Just my 2c worth.
Regards
Craig
