Title: Filter email attachments
Post by: Olsen on April 15, 2004, 11:35:45 PM
We are running SME 5.6
Can I setup email attachment filters to block certain extensions?  If so, how....

I am an extreme novice on Linux and need some assistance.

Also, Is the SME 6.0.1 a beta version or a developer release?

You may want to read this thread from the Devinfo mailing list.

The contrib for blocking executible attachments by Gordon Rowell has not been tested on 5.6 but works great on 6.x. I intend to test it on 5.6 this week end and will report back the results.

If I were you I would update to v6.0 or 6.0.1 and implement executable content blocking, it works very well and can block any type of attachments you choose.
A deliberate by-product is that it rejects over 99% of virus infected emails.

I have been running it for a few weeks now, and my Clamavis scanner has detected 1 virus in the last 2 weeks (compared to hundreds previously).

If you can wait, I have a howto in final stages of production, it should be available in a few days time.

Yes I know that Ray, but there are hardware restrictions that prevent upgrading this particular server to 6.x. Until my client comes up with some cash to upgrade the hardware they, and I, are stuck with 5.6.

Just to update everyone, I have not need able to get this contrib to work with 5.6. It simply is NOT compatable with 5.6. I work at it on a test system for quite a while but there were just too many things broken in the mail system.

Best to just upgrade to 6.0 or do without this one.
