Title: Help wanted: How to install SME on a Compaq Proliant 1600?
Post by: Dastardley72 on April 16, 2004, 08:54:49 PM
Hello,

In version SME 5.5 I've had always a good install on a Proliant 1600. Now I want to upgrade to version SME 6.0 and the installation hangs on the Anaconda loader. In Red Hat Linux above V7.2 you have the same problem on a Proliant. But in Red Hat Linux you have the option to type what you want Anaconda to do e.g.:

linux text apm=off lowres noapic noht nomce nousb nousbstorage skipddc

With this line, I get Linux installed. But I want to install SME and not Red Hat Linux. Is there a way to make a custom bootloader or bypass this problem?

I've tried the following:

-Disabled the onboard TLan networkcard and added a PCI networkcard.
-I put in a USB-card.
-Tried to install it on different Proliant 1600 servers.

The only thing that seems to work is an upgrade from version 5.5 to 6.0. But after this I seem to have a unstable network neighborhood where the server sometimes disapears. There is only a connection possible with Putty (SSH).

Does somebody knows how to:
-install SME 6.0 on a Compaq Proliant 1600
-get the network up without problems

I'll appreciate your help on this. I want to get this work.

Thanx,

Jasper

I don't know if this helps or not.  If booting from CD, can you hit control-c during the initial boot up when booting from the CD, then typing the line you have above except replace linux with accept.

Thanks guys!!

The solution with the Control+C worked!
I installed the PL1600 with succes with the following line:

accept text apm=off lowres noapic noht nomce nousb nousbstorage skipddc

I also had a few network problems, just as I expected.

I tried to make Windows XP member of the domain (regedit). This failed, but there was a connection and I could use the shares, ping, shh, server-manager, e.t.c.). I found out that there was maybe a problem in Samba because I changed things, expanded the config files and tried to restart the Samba service. The service NMB failed to stop, SMB failed to start.

After this I tried with ifconfig to see what happened on the NIC of the server. Ifconfig froze after calling the command, so there was more.

I searched in lots of forums where lots of guys had problems with the onboard TLan NIC. So I disabled with SmartStart (Compaq server config tool on cdrom) the onboard NIC and added another LAN card (PCI). Everything seems to work pretty well now.

Thank you !!
