I am a newbie at linux and am trying to install the SME Server OS onto a freebie computer I recently aquired. The install process keeps shutting down when it gets to the allocation process. I've tried using fdisk to create an active partition for it, should I not set it active. Can anyone help me install this or point me to a URL that can help. someone through me a bone, PLEASE

Hi
Not a whole lot of info here, however you don't have to fdisk.

And your type of harddisk is? How old? Checked HD for errors?
-
The HDD is an older Quantum 5.25 series. It should be good, my linux guru gave it to me and said it was waiting on an OS, but I'll run some diagnostics. Any installations hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx :pint:

The best tips and hints for a beginner you get from reading the Technicians Handbook found on the Documentation page under Manuals (you need a pdf-reader).
Pay attention to the chapters on requirements for a working server.
Personally I think your old Quantum drive is a nogo.
I tried one myself some years ago, and if I never see a Quantum drive again it'll be too soon, if you know what I mean.
But if you read the Technicians Handbook thoroughly you are well on your way, even if it relates to the Mitel version of SME, which they call the MAS 6000.
Just ignore that. The information is valid.

And HD capacity? I see SME 6.01 need > 1GB.

Hi, first sorry for my bad english...
I've got 'exactly' the same problem, crash and reboot when formatting partitions (the root partition sized 100MB only !).
It was a memory problem.
After i checked memory i found one which was bad, replaced and then SME install with no problem at all.
Hope it may help you...
