Title: Upgrade options from version 5.5
Post by: martin1999 on April 21, 2004, 07:19:53 AM
Hi,

Can I upgrade straight to vers 6 from 5.5 or do I have to go to 5.6 and then 6.0?

Thanks Martin

Safest way is 5.6 > 6.0.1

Reason why is 5.5 and 5.6 are very much different and your more likey to have problems!

It would be best to do a complete fresh install of 6. The upgrade path from 5.5 is loaded with problems.  Even upgrading from 5.5 to 5.6 can give you problems depending on the contribs you have installed on your 5.5 box.

If you must upgrade, at least uninstall all the contribs first. Then reinstall the ones you need after you get 6 working properly.

Jumped straight from 5.5 (plain, no contribs at all) to 6.0b3 ... machine wouldn't start dnscache automatically, wouldn't serve webpages to Internet, wouldn't do email retrieval properly, etc. even after in-place upgrade to 6.0.01-01.  Next step is to back up the files, wipe it out & start from scratch.

I have a 5.6 box on my home LAN that I successfully upgraded from 5.5 with MANY contribs installed, but I'm afraid to jump to 6.  So as long as there aren't any critical security issues, there it stays.

I think I'll do a fresh install of 6 and copy over the home directories. The box is currently only used as a mail server and we have no contribs installed.

thanks all
