I currently have Outlook set up getting mail from my isp. is there any way that I can use the webmail feature on sme to access my mail on my windows box if they are on the same workgroup?
-
you can just use a power cord of any type or color from one computer to the other and webmail should work fine
ask a stupid question get a stupid answer!

No! But you could setup your email as IMAP and move the mail from your Outlook .pst file to your inbox on the server.
You could configure your server to retrieve your mail directly and read your mail both from Outlook or web mail.

Isn't it lovely that it is so easy to hide behind the 'guest' avatar.
You'd be well advised to remember that there are no stupid questions - only stupid answers!
Shame on you!

Wyron thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately there are people in this world ("GUEST") that make fun of others to make themselves feel good, and can't even show their name for it... I feel like I am in 1st grade again..
The problem is my isp wont offer imap services. I tried setting it up, but it wont let me retrieve my mail. It only gives me the pop option. Is it possible to retrieve from (bellsouth isp) through sme and just use it as an imap to get my mail from outlook??
cliff thanks for the response.

I'm at work right now, so I cannot provide any definite answer, since I have denied myself (and everybody else) remote access to my server.
But - I'm sure you can find some possibilities in the server-manager->Mailsettings.
Also read the relating chapters in the Admin Guide and Technicians handbook here: http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/
If you get lost, lets take it up here again later on.

I have been using e-smith for several years and have followed
the forum but I have yet to recall any abuse of members such as I have lately. I have read all of the posts on this thread and the base question was very simple it appears the person has no network knowledge from reviewing his other posts in the experienced forum also
I feel this forum is for sme questions not simple tech support
that should be up to the person's isp Anyone that feels that I am in error should read the posts from sme6 before responding
The sme forum has a few different branches general - experienced etc if this type of behavior is getting to be acceceptable way don't we just start a chat room I feel this forum is a great value to members and if we are going to answer these very basic questions that don't have anything to do with sme maybe contribs, org can start another forum for them.
I have found that general questions can be answered using simple searches on google or yahoo and feel that the sme forums should be kept to sme issues If we stray from the sme system issues it will surely die with the interest not being
kept on bug issues and system enhancments

SME can retrieve mail from your ISP's pop server. You can then use IMAP to read your SME account. You have many options from IMAP as to on how to store messages and the view is the same from whatever source you view from.
In Outlook you now have all your POP mail under “Outlook today” and each IMAP would show as a separate category. You can move mail between mailboxes or accounts. You could initially move the mail from your current inbox to your SME IMAP account. If you then set your SME box to retrieve the mail from your ISP it would be in your IMAP inbox.

to 'GBaird': We were all there once, remember ?
to 'electroman00': hi(gh)mem.sys ? I don't think he ever had that. And you keep referring to stupid questions - no reason for that. Questions can expose lack of knowledge or insecurity - not stupidity, unless they are repeated after valid answering (in which case they are really sort of, wellll ., answers, right?)
to 'Guest': I have nothing more to say to you
to '(second) Guest': Right you are - but that doesn't help the poor man much, unless you tell him how to proceed in SME.
to 'HectorG': In your server manager, there is a menu item called E-mail.
Looking there, you will find your friend under ETRN or multidrop.
Get the hostname of your isp's mailserver and write it there.
With the supplementary mailfetching frequency and logon-info, you can just point your Outlook to your own server, and collect your mail. Your server will se to it that the mail is there.
. . . but it's like telling Michael Schumacher to stay in first gear of his Formula 1 car when racing.
The SME can do so much more if you just let it.
Please, HectorG, take the tíme to read the documentation referred to elsewhere - you have my personal guarantee that the time is well spent !!!!!
Get it printed out on paper and READ it !
By and by you'll understand what it's all about, believe me.

Thank you! I will do the reading, troubleshooting and come back if I have any "stupid questions" at some later time. Wyron and all those who helped thanks again! To all others sorry if you felt I wasted your time.

Hello
I have spent my time learning but did not ask anybody I could find to answer if I had a windows problem I contacted microsoft or spent the time to look at windows forums I feel this sme6 should not ask general questions as this is a sme forum after all ! This is simply in no regard to sme but network questions are meant to be answered in other forums
I have a 62 ford falcon I would not ask the questions here
I would contact ford or a auto forum unless anybody feels they should answer here
We are trying to keep sme alive HERE not nurse-maid people that don't know networking or anything about linux Contact redhat or suse or debian for those issues If anyone feels differently
they can setup a forum to answer the questions that DON'T pertain to sme
If you look at the reads verses the answers you will agree
I have answered several sme questions and feel it is a help to people using sme but I don't feel our time is well spent helping people with common computer questions
How do I read email or which os can we use to futher sme
what is this forum for!
I am not afraid to login with my comments and you see I try to be helpful when I can but again this forum is for sme NOT general or basic computer questions
I have been a very sucessful isp and you learn to deal with people as needed sme6 has asked several very basic questions even in the experienced forum why! It shows in the questions
I have answered some but only to find he did not want it to work that way but did not know how networking worked
I am not against helping people or newbe's but again THIS forum is for sme not a "how do I"
Anyone that feels I am wrong should start a howto forum theirself - some links below just buy the bandwith
http://www.mailgust.org/
http://www.phpbb.com/ thats what forum this runs on
or check out
http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Mailing_List_Managers/index.html
Let us get back to where we are going with sme and not forget we will soon need a base system redhat, whitebox, fedora or something
Let us not forget this is a sme forum
Please review the questions sme6 has asked I feel that most of us are beyond this type of level or we would not even use sme
help is help but air up your tire

Hello
I checked your profile now I know what has happened to sme
People like you are the cause for a great os to fail
As a system administrator I have found it is a far better thing
to be quite them open your mouth and remove all doubt
I will consider the remarks you made just pure stupidity
it is a shame you have NOT figured out that this forum is for the betterment of sme not a playground of idiots
by the way nice website

Hi HectorG,
To extend on wyron's answer, you could also install something like Vincent Filali's multi-pop addon which will allow you to collect POP3 mails from quite a number of different mail accounts on a user by user basis.
Eg. User1 has 3 mail accounts out there (us1@ISP1.com, myaccount1@ISP2.com, bigdeal@isp3.com) and User2 has 2 mail accounts (us2@isp1.com, haha@isp4.com)
Using the multi-pop addon, your SME server could collect the mails from all those mail accounts and drop them into the approriate user's mailboxes.
Then, as suggested by wyron, you can use IMAP on your LAN stations to access the mails and webmail when you are out of the office.
Hope this helps.
Kelvin
