Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone shares my experience recently
of adding more and more XP machines to existing
small networks of mostly Win98se PC's and an SME server.
Whilst the 98 machines will do a domain logon
and the run the netlogon script, map drives,
set the time and whatever else it seems I am
having a hard time getting XP to do that.
My solution so far is just to join a workgroup
of the same name (with existing user/pass) and
copy the netlogon.bat file onto the XP hard disc
to run it from there.
Even then homes don't seem to work correctly
either and I end up using windows own 'map drive'
feature.
If anyone out there has this nailed I would love
to know how its done or what your workarounds are.
Thanks !

Have you installed the reg key found in home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit

Yes, first thing I did.
It didnt seem to help much ?
Thanks for replying tho :)

This issue has been referred to the bug tracker.
Right now it looks like the problem is DNS-related, but the bug tracker is the place to keep yourself informed of development (if you haven't spotted it yourself).

Just focusing on set time
to set the time in windows xp requires elevated permissions
i always edit the 11domainAdminGroup fragment of the smb.conf file to include @shared - this raises the permissions of everyone validated on the network to give them administrtive priviledges over their workstation
does the netlogon script run when you are connected as a domain ?
-
Thanks David,
No actually, thats why I end up just joining a workgroup.
The logon script doesnt even execute when joined as a Domain.
The SME is a PDC and the logon script works on the 98se machines no problem.
To add the XP's to the domain I had to give the admin user/pass.
I could see shares if I browse but the logon script never appears at all.
Any help truly appreciated.

A toughy
- DO you have any drives mapped to start ?
- In particular Z: drive
-- If XP can't map the Z: drive to the netlogon share the batch file will fail, similarly, if you disconnect or remap Z: the script will terminate
- Does the XP Machine have a history ?
-- are we talking a machine;
- just built
- connected to domain
- signorseal setting adjusted
- reboot
- change domain, and logon
or has the XP Machine got more of a history ?
- when you are logged on, can you find the netlogon share and execute the batch file

Hi Again,
These are new PC's in general.
What is your recommended order of doing things ?
A step by step would be appreciated if you have had
some succes in this !
Thanks

That is all the steps ...
Apart from joining the domain
just check there is no firewall

Have you tried adding your SME Servers IP-adress in WINS tab (in TCP-IP settings) ?
You'll find it under Intenet-protocol --> Advanced -> WINS
Good luck, Ergin
