Title: e-smith help

can e-smith act as a email server and not just collect from another mailserver (is this a stand alone email server)

Yes, it can, and, in fact, does so by default. You will need to register a domain if you want to send email outside your LAN, and depending on whether you have a fixed IP address or not, you may need to use a dynamic DNS service. The online manual covers all of this in some detail.

i have a domain and i use zone edit but for some reason i can not get email sent to the box

If you've just signed up for ZoneEdit, it takes up to 72 hours for the DNS to be propagated. You also need to set up an "A" record for mail.mydomain.com (where "mydomain.com" is your new domain name).

By default ZoneEdit sets up domain.com and www.domain.com only.
