I've made a backup of my SME 5.6 server (all 6.5 GB of it), foolishly thinking I'm now protected againsr data loss. Wrong. I can't restore it (to SME 6.0). Upgrade gone bad. I've tried every browser I can think of, and they all die (crash, don't allow access to file, or only transfer a small portion of file). This all under Linux (can't get file to NTFS partition to try Windoze).
Does anybody know how I can get my stuff back. After a failed restore attempt SME refuses to anything more with backup untill rebooting (which has no effect). How can i (A) get server back to accepting backup/restore short of re-installing and (B) get my stuff onto server (is it OK to copy file there and extract all files and re-boot) ?

There is an issue restoring files of that size, in short you cannot do it. Sorry.
Search here on backup and back2ws for all the reasons.
You could rebuild your server manually (& configure it).
Then restore the data files on a Windows box using WinRAR and copy the data to the server.
The safer backup solution is to use backup2ws contrib from Darrell May, set it to split the backup file into < 2Gb chunks and you will be able to restore OK.
