Title: General Opinion of E-Smith
Post by: Mike on December 13, 1999, 10:28:37 PM
Hello group,
I just placed an order for e-smith and I was curious as to everyones opinion of the overall product and thier experiences.  My application will initially be for sharing a DSL Static connection so any others which have used a similar setup is even more appreciated.

I have been using a standard ipchains box until now, but want the added flexibility of an integrated DNS caching name server and squid proxy.  While the ipchains setup worked perfectly fine, there were a few glitches on certain DNS lookups which could not be fixed, regardless of any configs I attempted.  Installing a DNS on the ipchains box, is just too time consuming right now so a shrink wrapped solution is ideal.  Has anyone experienced any glitches with the integrated DNS/DNS caching name server on e-smith?

Any info and replies would be most appreciated
TIA
Mike

Well needless to say I promptly received my order the next morning.   The install went without a single hitch and was all too easy.    I had to alter some of the configurations in order to get a quake server accessable by internet users behind the e-smith the box.   I have since installed the quake server on the esmith system, although it was not recomended.  The dedicated server is so small in size in terms of memory and cpu utilizatrion that I knew it would not cause a problem.

If there are any others out there that need assistance in getting quake 3 to work with e-smith, don't hessitate to ask.
Regards,
Mike
