Title: Hardware RAID change on existing system
Post by: Crome on April 30, 2004, 11:50:11 AM
Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to enable hardware RAID mirroring on a running SME server? I was thinking of installing the RAID driver, rebooting, enabling the hardware RAID in the promise controller BIOS and booting into SME. Is this foolish/not possible/not advisable?

Any experiences?

Hey, all you RAID-freaks! This should be easy for you... Just tell me if it's possible or not...  :-)

Nothing is IM-possible .-)
...but (since the hd-arrangement is different) it's probably not "worth the effort".
ITS SO EASY TO SET UP A NEW RAID-SME ... being the main reason .-)

But if you want to do it yourself there is an easy checking procedure for you:
(1)Use that 2nd HD you have already bought and install a BRAND NEW SME ...
...now you see how that md0,md1,md2 setup  looks like...
(2)THEN install & mount that current disk of yours and compare...
(3)If you feel you can "arrange things" - do it.

Note:
Since the RAID system will work on one single disk
(the other is set on (defective) meanwhile)
you can fiddle without risk.
.. just change disks if you want to go back SAFE.

Going forward to getting RAIDed is also easy...
when the raid works with all your stuff
just partition&format that old disk like the raid-disk
and mirroring will start after a reboot.

Almost forgot:

and if you feel like reading... here's more:

SETTING UP SME RAID 1 - doesn't require ANY of this...
just install 2 HDs and answer the respective question
...voila RAID1 for free :-)
