Hi, due to lack of available PC, I'm forced to install SME-Server 6 on Virtual PC 2004.
Also installing on VirtualPC makes it easy to move the server around between different physical servers.
Unfortunately, everytime the install will fail with the following message:
There was an error installing kernel-smp-2.4.20-18.7. This can indicate media failure, lack of disk space, and/or hardware problems. This is a fatal error and your install will be aborted. Please verify your media and try your install again.
The virtual machine has only one processor though, so it's not making sense to me why SME-server tried to install SMP kernel.
I switched to console #2, and executed "df -k", here's what I found:
Filesystem 1k-blocks used available use% mounted on
rootfs 3735 722 2823 20% /
/dev/root.old 3735 722 2823 20% /
/tmp/cdrom 342208 342208 0 100% /mnt/source
/tmp/hda3 1654880 252896 1317920 16% /mnt/sysimage
/tmp/hda1 99521 4127 90255 4% /mnt/sysimage/boot
On the console #3, I saw this:
WARNING: Your root partition is less than 250 megabytes which is usually too small to install Mitel Networks server
However, I've allocated 2 GB of hard disk space for that virtual machine, so I think that should be enough for SME-Server 6.
I've also tried allocating that space both as dynamic and fixed hard disk, both to no avail (same error messages)
Any idea what I can do to resolve this ?
SME-Server 5.6 installed with no problem though. However, I need its mailserver to serve mutiple domains, and there's no way to create an email account for the virtual domains for example.
I was hoping that SME-Server 6 may provide this facility, but as you can see I'm stuck on the installation phase.
Thank you,
Harry

I've never used VirtualPC, but on VMWare it always worked fine.

Yes, there is. Manually configuring per how-to http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/howto/vdomain-alias-howto.html
or buy vdomain add-on from dungog.net.
>> I was hoping that SME-Server 6 may provide this facility
No, it doesn't. E-mail domains are the same.
You will face the same problem with SME 6.x

Not sure why you're having trouble installing it but I know it did work on mine.
[root@sme6 root]# /sbin/e-smith/db configuration show sysconfig
sysconfig=configuration
KernelArch=athlon
KeyboardType=pc
Keytable=us
Language=en_US
PreviousSystemMode=serveronly
ReleaseVersion=6.0.1-01
SoftwareRaid=no
Installed on Virtual PC 5 -- not sure where this version stands versus the 2004 version you mention. I stopped bothering with updating it after Microsoft assimilated them.
VMWare works great too.

Sorry, it should be "there's no way to manage virtual domain accounts from the standard server manager".

Alright... thank you for the information.
Regarding VirtualPC versions, I have quite some compatibility problems with VPC v5.1, less with VPC 5.2, and practically no problem with VPC 2004 - until now.
Thanks for all the information, I need to consider my options now.
Thanks again,
Harry

vdomain add-on from dungog.net does it via standard server-manager panel.
