Title: A records and MX Records
Post by: jack_b on May 03, 2004, 12:44:02 PM
Im getting a little confused !

I registered a .co.uk name but the A record and MX records are with another company.

If I change the A record to point to my sme6 server IP address will it direct people who type in my domain name direct to my server ?

Do I need to change the DNS ? If so, do I put in my IP address or does the sme 6 not allow for this?

Also, I understand my server is an email server as well, Do I get the MX records to point to my server and how do I configure it to retrieve my emails from the web ?

Its all very confusing. At the moment I have my domain redirected to my server but this has its limitations I am reliably informed.

Any help in plain english would be grateful.

Hello
First of all do you have a static ip suplied from your isp in the form of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

If not you will neeed to use a dynamic service such as http://www.dyndns.org and use your sme servers onboard notifier to updata your ip address

If you do you point it at your server using your domain holders A record pointer then put your mx record as mail.your domain .xxx
If they give you the capability of using mail servers as a backup servers please follow thier online help pages

Yes I do have a static Ip number

I have now pointed the A record to my static IP

However, when i try to put in the mx record, it says it is invalid. Do I have to wait for the A record to be updated before I can update the mx record?

From searching dnsstuff.com it says that there are no mx records for my mail, onyl for the name ???

Can you create mx records if they dont exist?

have you set up your domain as a virtual domain on your sme box  or the main domain.

I'm asuming that you're editing your zone file by a web interface that your domain reseller has provided.
Each domain reseller has a different interface, some easier to use than others.  I use http://www.freeparking.co.uk
One problem that I had was with a previous reseller was that I didn't have any reverse resolution on my ip address and they wouldn't create the mx record because of it via the web interface.
I'd contact your domain reseller and ask them to create an mx record pointing at your ip address.
