Title: SME as DHCP client in Server-only mode
Post by: RonM on May 09, 2004, 05:02:12 PM
If possible, and if it wouldn't cause other problems, I would like to see an option, during installation, to configure SME as a DHCP client when choosing Server-only mode (with a single NIC).
This isn't a hot-button problem for me at present, but I think it might become one. It would also simplify installations into networks where some other device is the gateway (and DHCP server) - especially if the installer doesn't have access to the gateway device.
Inside a fully-functioning network, where you're just adding a server, DNS name resolution works very well for access to files, web sites, etc.. Static IPs for servers are not as necessary as they used to be.
I think the software to do this is already there, it's more a matter of what screens you see during the install.

Can anyone offer a hint as to how this could be made to be possible?

In server only mode it should be possible to let the SME Server pick up its name and IP address from DHCP. This coudl work very well when the DHCP server is another SME Server handing out IP addresses based on the MAC address.

There is also thread on this.
