Title: Files appear in the wrong folder on Mac OSX but not on OS9
Post by: Anonymous on May 13, 2004, 09:58:38 AM
Hi,

I have been using SME 5.6, (and recently 6.0.1) for 2 years to  share files to Mac OS9 clients with no problems.

Yesterday I added my 2 new G5 running MacOS 10.3 and noticed that some files were appearing in the wrong folders. restarting the mac seems to fix the problem with the files being viewed but then other files soon appear to have moved when browsing other folders.

The misplaced files are real files that are located in other folders on the SME and when clicked from the OSX macs they open corectly so the filename is pointing to the correct file, its just that the filenames are appearing where they should not be.As you can imagine this renders a folder based filing system useless.

The files have not moved (i checked on mac OS9 clients and all is displayed correctly).

Im slightly bemused. Has anyone else experienced this problem. A designer I spoke to a couple of days ago told me that MAC OSX (jaguar - not sure which number that is) sometimes has problems with preview Icons jumping to the wrong file when you delete a file - or something - are there some issues with OSX file browsing - just from within the OS?? does anybody know??

Should I be using NFS for the OSX macs (i read a year or so ago that NFS was not part of the standard SME due to some compatibilty issues with samba and netatalk.

If it helps SME is standard SME 6.0.1 (no added modules) installed 3 weeks ago, running on Compaq Proliant ML 350 G1 800mhz PIII, single SCSI Ultra320 73gb.  and working flawlessy with win98 macOS9 throughout the problem. Files are Mac and PC Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator, and various image formats total of around 40gb and maybe 100,000 files.

Any Comments at all appreciated.

Hi,
I have the same problem, but just with MacOS X 10.3 (panther). Everything works ok with MacOS 9 up to MacOS X 10.2 (jaguar).
I have no solution, and will probably move from SME to something else.
Title: Are your Macs using Appletalk or Samba?

If the former, change to the latter.  If the latter, try upgrading Samba to version 3 ... various threads have addressed this issue and Samba 3 should be much better at handling OS X clients.
