Hi Folks....
I'm currently in the process of replacing a win2000 server with SME 6 in server only mode...
I already run SME as a gateway to the internet...
Here's the question..
Is there any merit in running a SME server/gateway AND a server only box for my windows storage? Or, should I just run the one?
Thanks for your input...

No. Generally one box with sufficient capacity will do just fine.
In your particular case it may be different, but you didn't provide details about your network (number of users, applications running, etc..)

OK... my bad :-(
Here's a little more info....
The current SME runs as a server/gateway with a static IP.
It runs the standard compliment of apps:
Mail server
anti virus
content filtering
and ssh for remote monitoring/maintenance
The company's Web site is hosted remotly, so the only
http is a redirect to that site and for remote management.
not much more then that...
It's a small network, 10 workstation... mostly Win98 and WinXP Pro and my Linux workstation ( of course :) )
The 'new' SME will simply be a Samba server and domain controler...
I'm a bit concerned ( wrongly so maybe ) that the samba storage may be more easily accessed if the firewall was compromised...
Thanks

If firewall gets compromised, samba storage equaly easy accessed on the gateway server or internal server-only (read no firewall) server. Until that (break in) happend samba is only running in the internal NIC and not accessible from outside network. Keep it (server) updated and follow general security guidelines for giving access to the server to prevent it from happening. Simple setup is easier to keep secure.
Your network is primary target for SME server and I would use single server-gateway in this scenario.

Thanks!
Sounds good to me.... One Server it is...
