Title: 6.0.1 Server Failure
Post by: joepok on May 24, 2004, 01:23:10 AM
Hey Guys,

I've been using SME 6.0.1 for a couple of weeks now. It freezes and crashes occasionally, but it's running on a PII 350 Mhz so, I assume that is the cause.

I finally put a SME 6.0.1 system as the main Router/ Server for our computer labs at work on a 700 Mhz machine and find it freezes and needs restarts every few hours... so I did a fresh install on a PIII 650 Mhz 256 RAM/ 160 Gig HD. Here's the problem:

The system boots fine, but leaves me at the login prompt, not the menu... When I log in as root, and do ifconfig, I get only the one loopback lo 127.0.0.1, no menu, no ethernet devices, no nuthin'...

I tried this on 2 separate but similar systems... any ideas?

Thanks

Joe

login as admin to get the menu.  If you want the menu to show up by default, then choose option 2 to configure server and choose the auto selection on the selecet console mode screen.

If you've installed all these systems from the same burnt CD, I'd suspect your image is corrupt.  The one and only time I've actually had an e-smith box fall over was when it ran out of disk space.

yup.. i have had similar problems on different machines. The machine runs well for some hours or minutes, then it freezes and no communication through teh NICs was possible.

In all cases i had some network cards with a old DEC (21140? dunno yet) chipset. After worked well after i changed these NICs to some with a Realtek chipset.
