Is there any way to use sftp instead of ftp? Is there an opensource client?

Yes I only use sftp. But the downside is that you need to give the users shell access for it to work. You can get a contrib from http://www.dungog.net/sme/files/e-smith-usershellaccess-0.1-2.noarch.rpm, which enables you to give them that access.

As for the client. I use winscp. Do a search i google and you shall find.
