The GSX Server works fine since a week.
I will publish for free this Howto if contribs.org are totaly free in future.
If contribs.org comes a parital or full paid service, I publish this Howto as eBook for €50.-- Sorry.

Go on, Be a sport and post your howto.

I understand your point but... As long as we keep changing thoughts and projects all community will benefit, isn't it?
Anyway, could you please just point me how did you addressed the problem regarding network connections? As soon as I install and configure vmware and bridge it's virtual connection to the sme host machine, I loose ALL network connections as soon as I reboot.
Best regards and keep up the good work.
PS: Is it possible to use vmware workstation without Xfree too?

VMWare GSX server let you "disconnect" local console and redirect it to another computer, therefore its possible to get away with just X libraries to satisfy the dependency and not full X gui on the server. VMWare workstation only allows you to use local connection to the Virtual Machines and Full X windows (with windows manager) is required on the server.
I’ve tried to follow this how-to and tested VMWare GSX .v3 on SME. The VMWare management interface prevents default apache config from running even they run on the different ports.
This far I am thinking of configuring standard Linux distro (SUSE or RH) with VMWare on it and run SME along some workstations as guest computers in my test environment.

organetic - cant really help with your network problem except to say I just used the defaults for everything in the vmware-config.pl script. The network survives a reboot.
Boris - I have GSX server 3.0.0 running here on a test machine with no problems with the web interface for either SME or GSX server. The only problem I do have is with squid and atalk which I am not really concerned about.
-
duncan,
what SME version you are using it with?
-
A clean install of 6.0.1. with no other contribs.
-
So why do I loose access to server manager? I can't reach it through the console also. Is there a fix?

Looking at your howto - It looks like your using two nics. Perhaps the firewall is giving you grief. I dont think I bridged the connection going for NAT instead.
Boris - I have built a small rpm that installs templates for - services, hosts.allow and xinetd.conf and deals with vmware-authd.

Nice. I would like to take a look. vmware-authd gave me the most grief.

From Here (http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dthomas/smeserver/6.x/Contrib/GSX%20Server/smeserver-vmware-authd-0.1-1.noarch.rpm)
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop vmware status enabled
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save
/sbin/reboot

Thank you. I'll try and let your (and everybody interested) know of results.

Tried it again with GSX 3.1
Works fine until I install and use web management.
It runs different version of apache from different config file and on the different port and it conflicting with main instance of apache anyway.

Hi Boris.
I am looking at it now. I can confirm connection to both
http://10.0.0.100/server-manager
and
http://10.0.0.100:8222/vmware/en/
I am running GSX 3.0 on 6.0.1 in server only mode with atalk and squid disabled.

can you check if
https://10.0.0.100:8333/vmware/en/ works as well?
-
Doesnt look like it. It asks me to accept the certificate and then throws me to
http://10.0.0.100:8222/vmware/en/
Regards Duncan

That is what I ecountered as well. GSX3.1 use ssl by default. I will try http only.
-
It works now with fresh install on the test server.
the only difference from how-to is minimal set of rpms, no full X-windows, just x-libs and gcc with kernel headers. to start it automatically had to create http.vmware link in rc7.d
now trying to make DVD-CDRW combo drive work with Virtual Machines

GSX server 3.1 runs just fine on my SME 6.01 with devtools installed.
After installing the virtual console mui, i can access the virtual console using my browser. However when i reboot the SME box, i can't access the virutal console anymore. Is there a sullution for this problem?
Boris has the sollution:
After putting httpd.vmware link in rc.7 everything works just fine :-D

Where to find the howto you are talking about?
-
I am not aware of a howto for GSX server (although Guenter claims to have done one - and won’t share)
If you follow the install method from the vmware site it isn’t that difficult.

Hi Guenter,
Have you decided if your going to post your VMware how-to?
Thanks,
