Title: Router - DMZ --> SME Server, open ports
Post by: Mark R on June 30, 2004, 01:27:53 PM
Hi all,

I have just opened my SME server to the outside world via DMZ from my router, and i have the following ports open.

SMTP 25  ***
HTTP 80
IDENT 113 ***
HTTPS 443

could someone please advise me if SMTP/25 and IDENT/113 is ok to have open, i.e. security implications etc...

With thanks

Mark

PORT 113 (ident) is harmless. Some services rely on it and better to leave it open.
Port 25 only needed if you manage e-mail server and need incoming e-mail be received by your server. Internal e-mail handling on the SME still will not allow to relay e-mail through your server for outsiders, only for your internal computers, so if is not unprotected and relatively safe.
