Title: Install on dual hard disks using software mirroring
Post by: MrYogi2 on July 08, 2004, 12:12:52 AM
When I do a single disk installation, the installation gets done in 5-10 minutes.

When I do a Install on dual hard disks using software mirroring, it takes forever. It has been 30 minutes now and it says 300 more hours to finish the installation.

What might be causing the problem?
Both the disks are 40GB Maxtors. One of them is 7200 RPM and other is 5400 RPM.

I had a similar problem about two years back installing sme 5.5.  I tried a number of things around the hard drives, however the issue turn out to be the cd rom i was using.  As soon as I replaced the CD ROM drive the software raid installation worked fine.

I can't explain why, but thats what worked for me.

I changed the CD Rom but it still is doing the same.
It starts at 300 hours remaining and slowly comes down to 1 hour remaining and then increases and decreases.

They may both be 40 gig, but I bet one of them has one platter and one has two, especially if one is 7200 RPM and the other 5400; or they're each "40 gigabytes" but otherwise subtly different.  You'd be much better off with drives of the same make & model.

I did install tree scis hard disk with no problems.  Works fine for me on a Dell P3 Poweredge 2300.

I have an 2 x 60G IDE disks config and that installation didn't take any longer time than a singel disk install and yes the are one 5400rpm and one 7200rpm.

There must be something in here conflicting with the hard drives, are the jumper settings correct? are they configured onto primary IDE0 and IDE1 or both on IDE0?

My experience sound like yours.  If I installed using the mirroring option, it failed each time, however if I installed the normal installation (i.e. no software mirror), the installation work brilliant.

I tried different brands of disks, speeds, size all with the same result.  Failed during software raid installation, but worked when I didn't select that option.  Finally after much debate and out of pure frustration I replaced my CD Rom, and the installed proceeded within a short period of time.
