Hi all,
Would anybody be interested is sharing their experiences using jabber on SME Server?
I currently have used John Blakely's howto at
http://www.khunjarnet.com/downloads/jabber/JabberIM_HowTo.htm
Since then I have found this:
http://www.diegothomson.edu.pe/jabber/
Anybody?

Whats the point of installing it on a server?
I thought jabber was for client machines? For use with msn/icq etc?
Enlighten me please :). I would love to have an intranet messaging function if thats what the idea is.
Cheer.

That is exactly what it does :-)
Also you can open access to the internet if you wish.
I had to open the port manually to achieve this.

Awesome! i'm gonna install this for sure.
Will do it this week and let you know how it goes...
How hard was it to get going? any issues to consider?
-
No issues for me. Would like to get SSL working and have had mixed results from different clients.
-
Shanen,
should i install all these:
http://www.diegothomson.edu.pe/jabber/
??
Or are the ones at the other link enough?
Cheers.

I used http://www.khunjarnet.com/downloads/jabber/JabberIM_HowTo.htm and it works fine.
If you can hang in there, I am about to test the other ones.

Mine came up with this using just the top link:
-----------------------
[root@centralserver abber]# rpm -Uvh sme-jabber-IM-0.0.1-6.noarch.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
perl-Jabber-Connection is needed by sme-jabber-IM-0.0.1-6
perl-XML-Simple is needed by sme-jabber-IM-0.0.1-6
perl-Scalar-List-Utils is needed by sme-jabber-IM-0.0.1-6
curl-ssl is needed by sme-jabber-IM-0.0.1-6
------------------------
So on mine it seems they are needed.
Thanks for posting that second link :D.

I can't seem to get logins to work. I have set hostname to my servers local ip address. I have enabled the user.
Also, i have also stopped/started the service after changing the hostname.
Just says:
! The connection to the server was lost
! Yabber will attempt to reconnect in 10 seconds
Any ideas?
If it makes a difference, i used the files at:
http://www.diegothomson.edu.pe/jabber/

Try Exodus as I have had some small problems using different clients

Sorry, just reread your post.
Follow the howto at http://www.khunjarnet.com/downloads/jabber/JabberIM_HowTo.htm and it works perfect. I am still playing with the other contrib from http://www.diegothomson.edu.pe/jabber/
-
Dont know if it makes a difference, but i used all the rpms from the second link...
Maybe its broken, I have followed the howto, no success.
And i've double checked that the jabber server is running.
I'm about to try exodus instead of yabber.

That is a shame indeed. That is why contribs.org is offering hosting space for SME Server contribs so they will always be available to the community. You know the 'drill', mail staff AT contribs.org and create your spot.

I have the files for the jabber install if anyone requires them.
You also need to open ports 5222 and 5269 tcp if you wish to open the jabber server to the outside world.
