Has anybody split the SME from the RH 7.3
I'd like to install on the SME package on a RedHat Entreprise.
--or--
Would that be a new project?
Thanks

I have seen Shad doing this on his website based on fedora core 2, see here http://lordsfam.net/sme70

Fair question...
There have been many questions about this in the past....
You just don't port a ROCK SOLID to ANY other arch/distro over night.
We suggest that anybody who want's to make an effort on porting the 'template' system to another distro to create a wiki page and try to gather fellow developers. But please do keep in mind the *real* goals of SME Server as it is now. Simple, Safe and Secure.

Just out of curiosity - is there a need to jump to a new distro.
Why wouldnt the current flavour just evolve as time went by.
-
The comment about rock solid is valid, but new hardware dictates the need to evolve
eg. SATA, many newer network cards, etc.

Safe, simple, secure sounds just fine to me... 8-)
It is a balance act, support for new hardware and at the same time try to keep things simple, safe and secure...
In the future there are other "distros" might be intreseting for SMEServer... I've tested CentOS and both CentOS 2 and CentOS 3.1 are promising.

There are also a few alternativ custom RedHat7.3 RPM repositories might be useful if you (AT YOUR OWN RISK) want to update to feel EXTRA SAFE & SECURE... :-)

Anyway, until then I have no problems sticking with good old 7.3 distro...
