I'm just about to put a hammer through a couple of machines here. Just a bit of background:
Clean install then restore from tape. 4 machines on the network (2 x 2K, 2 x XP) SME6.0.1-01 PDC. After restoring I unjoin the 2K boxes then rejoin and everything works EXACTLY as normal. But the XP boxes refuse to play the game. After unjoining the domain when I try to rejoin I get "username could not be found" as admin and "unknown user" as root. I've spent hours trying to find a solution for this and I think it may revolve around restoring the old secrets.tdb file?? When the script S00merge-system-files runs it produces an error with these four machines. Could this be a bug in the script or am I doing something wrong (see output below). I'm gunna have a another go, this time changing the NETBIOS name of the machine.

The part about the machine names missing after restore puzzles me. Anyone with more experience than me have any ideas?

I have seen this issue with both 2k and XP clients attempting to rejoin. I was able to add them back to the domain by using root instead of admin. To do this, you must create a root smbuser using the root password from the server.
When you change the server password, you must manually change the smb 'root' user password at the command line. I am assuming you have not upgraded to samba 3.
First, look to see if you have a root smbuser. Look in /etc/smbpasswd.....you will see all your smbusers.
If root is shown, reset the root smbpasswd by typing smbpasswd at the command line (as root).
Now use root instead of admin on the XP clients.
If no root smbuser is shown, I do the following to add an smbuser:
smbpasswd -a root
then
smbpasswd -e root
You should now have a root user in /etc/smbpasswd
hope this helps you,

I am also assuming you have done all the 'preps' for XP to join a samba domain!!!!!!
I run a registry patch (from SME server) on each client.
For both 2k & XP, I edit IP Domain security communication settings in Local security under administration.

Thanks heaps for the reply ryan. Both these XP boxes had all the patches and were previously connected to the domain. It was only after a standard re-install then restore from tape that I have these problems. I have not tried upgrading samba or anything. I tried to connect using both admin and root and neither worked. I'm just about to head back out there soon to have another go after I've cooled down a bit. I'll try you're sugestion about adding root to /etc/smbpasswd as I don't have a root user listed there. If that doesn't work I'll try renaming the machines. If that doesn't work it's MC hammer time :-D

Went back today and renamed the two XP boxes then rejoined using admin without a hitch. Profiles then loaded up without problems. Thanks for the help ryan.

Thanks for the reply Arnold,
My major hassle was getting the box to join the domain. Once I accomplished that the rest was plain sailing. I'm in no real hurry to play with Samba 3.0 at the moment. Thanks for the post anyway.

hi guys
my problem is that the roaming profiles are not working after the restore.
i tried:
1. disconecting from the domain
2. changing the computer name
3. rejoining
4. loging on - the profile loads with no problems but the startup routine is screwed up and windows just doesnt open outlook express or other programs no matter how many times I try and load.
please help me...
do you think that reinstalling windows will fix the problem?

If you suspect anything might be a bug (e.g. you find that something that you think should work which doesn't), then report it as a bug in the bug tracker.
