I am using Webware to support an XML-RPC service on SME 6.0. In order to integrate it with Apache I need to compile the mod_WebKit.so using a Makefile provided by the creators of the mod kit.
The Makefile contains the following reference to APXS.
APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs
I cannot find apxs on the SME system. It is present in the MacOS X installation of Apache, and I found discussion of it in the RedHat 9 doc's. I found the site where I can download an rpm to install it.
I have a bunch of questions about this: is it wise to install it, are there dependencies, and so on. I would be very grateful for advice and suggestions on this.

in a normal distribution of apache these come with apache-devel rpm, not sure how to get equivalent for sme
there is a frontpage howto here, it installs apxs which are required for it
I have been running frontpage on other platform and have been compromised through apache, but I don't think this was attributable to the frontpage extensions

This is troubling. May I ask what happened?

Maybe it's a little slack, i'm not sure but i don't fully know what happened.
I operate a number of servers remotely doing various tasks - I can't afford the bandwidth, so I "co-locate" - ie. hhouse the servers where there is bandwidth - it was a 7.3box (not sme) running frontpage server extensions - ports 80, 443 and 1729 open and it had been running for around 550 days consequtively. next thing there was a irc chat relay server running there from a directory /var/tmp/bot.x
the group and owner was apache, perhaps too simplistically assumption was drawn entry point was apache - but there wasn't much else open
anyway I have had a few compromises starting with the ill fated redhat 5.1, and the standard policy is shutdown
like i say maybe a bit slack, but I just cursed, rebuilt and throught 550 days was pretty good - it needed upgrading anyway.

I would say that 550 days without a restart is pretty good!
I was just reading about an exploit of placing files in /tmp on lunixquestions.org. A fellow there got hammered pretty badly and had to take the machine off-line. Here is the tinyurl link to the thread: http://tinyurl.com/6tzjg
