Title: Locking down the console?
Post by: Greg White on December 22, 1999, 05:18:49 PM
Maybe it's my lack of experience with the e-smith product, but I noticed after install that there seems to be no way to get out of the screen that allows you to configure, check stats, etc.

Am I missing something that will enable me to lock down the console on the server?

Thanks!

Ctrl-Alt-F3 should open a std runlevel3 console.

That indeed does bring me to a text based login screen, but it doesn't stop someone in the know from walking up to the PC and pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1/F2 and going back to the configuration screen.  My server is not in an area where I can secure it and this little problem disturbs me.

Isn't there any way to have e-smith boot up to a standard login prompt on all of it's virtual consoles?

1. You can disable the e-smith console by editing the
/etc/inittab file. Change the lines that starts with 1: and 2:.
Use line with 3: as a template. 1:  = tty1 and 2: = tty2.

2. reboot

3. To use the console you have type /sbin/e-smith/console and press enter.
