Title: SME 6 Port forwarding common questions?
Post by: albatroz on September 14, 2004, 06:28:36 PM
I have this doubt, if I setup a sme 6 box as a firewall (server&gateway config) can it make port forwarding to  any port?

I need to forward service specific ports: 21,80,110 and 25.

I used to use the portforwarding contrib for sme 5.6
but it had a bug so that everytime I create a new rule
all the other rules where reedited and all the content finally become forwarded to the last port entered.

Thanks in advance
Alejandro

All those ports are used by SME server itself. You only can forward ports that are not being used.
If you need firewall-only box, you better look at something like IPCop, M0n0wall or other firewall distro.

There is no problem forwarding the ports in 6.0 as far as I know. I used to forward port 25 to another e-smith box within the network. It works just fine.

all that ports are used by services (email, http, etc) on SME.
if you want to forward these ports, you have to stop that services first.
then you can use the port-opening and port-forwarding of SME to open and forward the ports wherever you want.
