Feeling security consious last week I changed the root password.
Despite writing it down I find that I am unable to access root any more.
I am absolutly sure I am using the correct password.
Is it possible that I have been hacked and some one has changed the password?
In either case I need access to me SME server. Does anybody know how I get into the box. I cannot make a boot disk because I cannot gain root access.
I have installed the same SME server for my brother so I could perhaps make a boot disk from his system.
How do I go about this operation and how do I usit to fix my system?
Martin :-( :-?

If you loose the "root" "admin" password do this -
hit CTL-X when the SME or esmith graphic comes up at boot-time. This puts it into lilo text input mode.
Type:
esmith single
This boots e-smith into single user mode and logs you on without a root password but with SU powers!
Now type
passwd root
enter the new root password and confirm
passwd admin
enter the new admin password and confirm (same as root)
Then type
init 7
-
CTRL-X gives me
Boot:
If I type esmith single the error is not an image [TAB] for immage list.
Options are then SMEServer-up or SMEServer-smp
Both these options then boot to a normal login and the unknown password is required.

At the Boot: prompt type
SMEServer-smp single
follow the rest of the instructions

I have the same problem and I tried the solution mention by Bob. However, user root does not exists in my case. I was able to reset the password for user admin. So I can not change its password. How do I create user root?

there MUST be a user root.
linux does not work without the root-account.
try it again.
BTW: root and admin have the same password.
cheers

I just found out that user "root" somehow changed to "Root". Now I am trying to find a way to change it from "Root" to "root". I have no idea how it happened as I did not change it.
