Title: Selling SMEServer preinstalled/Giving commercial support
Post by: ciccio on September 15, 2004, 02:18:56 PM
Hi all,
I have various small business customers who'd like to have services like PDC, mail, firewall etc. in an easy to manage solution.
I was about to start customizing Debian or TaoLinux in order to create a little distro with these features and a web interface, then I discovered SMEServer and I like it's architecture very much.
There goes the question; is it legal for me to sell hardware with SMEServer preinstalled and preconfigured? I guess it's all GPLed, but I would like a confirmation.
Of course, I would include the GPL in the package and a document with all the copyrights and how to obtain the source; I'd also like to share my customization with the community (maily italian translations for now), so I applied as a member of the Doc Team.
I would also make a donation for each machine sold and provide an rsync/http/torrent mirror.

Thank you in advance

This has been answered many times before.
It's GPL so you are free to do and charge whatever you want to, it's perfectly legal.

Welcome aboard, Ciccio !
We are some (100 / 1000 ?) to sell services based on this distro.

Your contribution is made of what you can : technical improvments, testing, bug-reporting, doc translation (I've seen your enrolling in this team), ...
... and maybe, if your business grows, some money to encourage further developpements or equipments of authors.

Good luck in your 'biz-adventure'.

A+,
RV.
