Title: Updates explained for dummies??
Post by: PsyDuck on September 16, 2004, 11:12:26 AM
Hi!

I've searched this site for answers but not really found what I'm looking for.

What I want to know is the 'correct' way to install updates/'new modules' and what to install.

Is there anything more I need to do beside download and running rpm -Uvh <rpmname>?? I've seen some references to a post-update command.

What should I install? Are there security/recommended/unstable repositories that clearly tells me what is safe and not?

/Jonas

I feel your pain, brother. Here are some links that helped me with this issue.

Linux newbie reference, in simple language

Another decent resource, well organized but a bit more technical
http://www.linuxquestions.org/index.php

Here on contribs.org are several threads that discuss the issue. I just learned about yum. This tool is very handy; you read about it here:
