HI,
I want to upgrade from SME v5.6 to the latest SME v 6.0.
Is there any how-tos I can read first?
Is there any known problems/isues?
What will happen with the contribs I have already installed?
Please share your experience!

my opinion:
the quicker way is to do a new clean install with 6.x.
if you have many contribs that are not compatible with 6.x, you have much work to remove them and install the new versions.
i read here that some people had problems with the upgrade, others had nothing.
i did the upgrade last week from 5.6 to 6.0.1 by a fresh install on a new harddisk. installed the needed contribs and got a clean SME.
cheers

If you have to upgrade, ensure that you remove all contribs before proceeding. Reinstall contribs after - ensuring that they are suitable for VS6. Backup to be on the safe side. I have done a douzain of these with no problems. This is not to say that it is fullproof. A fresh install is better on the long run...

I upgraded from 5.5 to 5.6 and again to 6.01 without any problems. No need for fresh install, just choose "upgrade" from the CD. Backup is of course always a good idea.

Thank you all for sharing your experience!
Listening to your comments - I'd rather do a fresh install on a new hard drive and then I'll try to restore the backup from 5.6.
I'm afraid of having problems with contribs I have already installed.
Can anyone tell me if a backup made over the web interface of v5.6 can be restored on v6.0.1 without any problems?

Hard to tell... check:

For production machine, I have opted to clone the drive and go the update path after removing contribs specific to 5.5 - this has kept all users + ibays etc. Never had problems. For a new install, I would be hesitant to restore 5.5 config over 6.01, prefering to re-enter all configs by hand + restore of the data using either ftp, or backup2ws contrib from Darrell May, or Dungog backup. Slow but safe, and a brand new installation as a bonus..
