Title: unable to connect to sme-share by machine name
Post by: knaidoo on September 19, 2004, 08:20:35 PM
Hi everyone,

I cannot see my sme 6.01.01 server in network neibourhood workgroup from windows XP (confirmed that they are the same name)  I can ping the server name: sme-linux and it resolves to the local ip: 192.168.1.10, however when I try to map from xp by running //sme-linux I get prompted for password but am unable to access server.  I can map to server, enter admin password and view/edit shares if I run //192.168.1.10

Anyone have any ideas why I can map by ip and not by machine name, or why I cannot see the sme-server in my network neighbourhood?

Thanks in advance,
Kris

Just a shot in the dark here...

Make sure on the XP machine under the Advanced TCP/IP properties that NetBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP.

Possibly check the XP firewall to see if it is turned on or has something misconfigured with it.

On your XP computer configure WINS server as 192.168.1.10
