Title: HELP with Upgrade & Backups

Hi all,
Due to (seemingly common) problems with disappearing IMAP folders & messages, I'm preparing to upgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2.
I backed up:
/home/users/ (users' IMAP folders)
/etc
/var

Can you please tell me:
- If this process means full HD reformatting
- In this case, what must I backup apart from mentioned above

I did backups with:
tar czvf archive_name source_dir
Please can you confirm that tar's syntax for recovering those files is indeed:
tar -x archive_name target_dir

Or should I do better by first trying to simply load the rpm for obtuse smtpd ...
