Title: Mail server problem (newbie)
Post by: Paolu on September 24, 2004, 02:27:41 PM
The mail server is working fine internally but if I try to send a mail to an external mail address it is placed in the queue and I can’t send mails from the outside to it.
As far as I can see the MX is working (the domain is hathathat.dk if you want to check), but it looks like the mail server ignores everything from the outside.
If you need any log files or other info please say so and I will try to get it.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Paolu,

Is the default gateway set correctly on the SME machine ?

Is it used as a Firewall or Server Only ?

In server-manager > View Log files, what clues are given in the log smtpfront-qmail/current ?

Seems there's no external connection to hathathat.dk on port 25 so you have nothing listening there for incoming email.

To build on Damian's post:

1. Have you installed any packages packages on your SME box or performed any other custom config?

2. Does your ISP block port 25?  Some do this especially with dynamic IP setups as they don't want to deal with the spammer issue.

3. Do you have your public DNS record setup correctly?

I have just realized they might be blocking port 25. Will that also prevent the mail server from sending or only receiving?

It is set as server & gateway, so it is working as a firewall. I have not installed anything except this (http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/saco/contrib/e-smith-qmHandle/) (witch I installed to try to get the mail working) and have not made any custom configs.

I think my DNS is working. Used this (http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/mail.ch?domain=hat@hathathat.dk) to check it.

And the log file is here (http://hathathat.dk/log.txt).
