Hello,
I have just installed SME on a box for the first time and cant get it to connect to the net.
I have a network of several computers and one server using "windows 2000 server".
I have a Dlink DSL-504 router/firewall and have tried every setting under the sun.
I read about converting the modem the Bridge but lost my entire internet access so cahnged it back to PPPoE.
Not sure where to go from here or if i have put in an incorrect setting.
Thanks for your help in advance.

alexs,
Setting up an SME Server behind a router can become complicated. You need to decide what services the router, Win2000 Server and SME Server are going to provide and then set-up each one accordingly. Typically it is easier to just eliminate the router, if possible. If you are going to continue to use the router as an internet gateway/firewall for the network you need to provide the following information as a bare minimum just to get started.
Do you have a fixed or dynamic IP address?
Does the router or Win2000 Server provide DHCP service for the network?
How many NICs do you have installed in the SME Server, 1 or 2?
What services does the Win2000 server provide? Do you plan to move any of these to the SME Server?
What services do you want the SME Server to provide?
What is the network topography, peer to peer or Windows Domain?

Thanks bobk.
I really appreciate your help.
;;Do you have a fixed or dynamic IP address?
I am using fixed ip addreses
The dlink modem is bridged to another hub as well as the dlink being used as a hub.
::Does the router or Win2000 Server provide DHCP service for the network?
The windows 2000 server provides DHCP
;;How many NICs do you have installed in the SME Server, 1 or 2?
I only have 1 nic in the SME computer though i have a spare i can use if need be.
;;What services does the Win2000 server provide? Do you plan to move any of these to the SME Server?
The windows 200 is only used as a file server (nothing else)
;;What services do you want the SME Server to provide?
I want the Sme computer to provide emails as well as hosting my web sites.
;;What is the network topography, peer to peer or Windows Domain?
I had problems with sharing right as a domain so i log on as a workgroup computer.
Not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Alexs,
This what I would do:
Configure SME as "server only mode" , give it a static IP address, make sure that DHCP is OFF (if you want to use the win2k server for DHCP) and use the internal IP address of the router as the internet gateway (on the SME)then on the router forward the necessary ports for web and email to the SME server. Should work OK, I think!
