Title: Boot failure fsck.ext3: exec format error
Post by: sqlerror on October 23, 2004, 05:02:11 PM
My sme can not be started anymore. The filesystem needs to be checked but the fsck excecutables are damaged.
During boottime an unclean filesytem is detected and when the system starts a filesystem check I get 'fsck.ext3: exec format error. I went into the shell and then it appears that /sbin/fsck.ext3 and /sbin/fsck.ext2 have been altered into zero lenght files.

How the * can I replace these files as the filesystem is mounted read-only ....

I wonder,

Maybe you can fix it with either Ultimate Boot CD or Knoppix.

sqlerror,

AFAIK fsck.ext3 actually runs e2fsck ...
Together fsck.ext3 and e2fsck will fit on a floppy... (or on CD .-) Mount from there...
... good luck 2 u

Booting Knoppix and trying to save asap may be a good option ... try the KANOTIX derivate it's a lot better still
