Title: Auto shutdown?

I'm fairly new to Linux so my apologies in advance if this is a FAQ - I couldn't locate the answer, though.

Recently installed SMEserver (about 2 months ago) with little or no real issues - working fine.  However, recently (after a power outage) my server seems to shut itself down after extended periods of non-activity (like - overnight) and I am wondering if there is some configuration switch I can change or whether something just got tweaked from the power outage.

When it happens the system 'looks' dead for all apparent purposes but when I hit the boot button on the front the lights blink momentarily and - nothing.  When I hit it a second time it comes up without any ill effects - which leads me to believe that it wasn't in a 'completely off' state if that makes any sense.

Since I am fairly new to Linux I am not sure of where the error logs reside that I should probably be perusing - or maybe someone knows the answer to this already.

FYI - this is a private server that I use for my home network (home business plus a family of 7 kids - requires some level of organization, right?).

Disclaimer: I am new to Linux and SME

You probably want to look at the messages log. If it is indeed the server issueing a shutdown command it will mostly likely appear  there. Though seeing as this problem started after a power failure in the home, it may indicate a problem with the machines power supply or system board.

After Power outage ?
Most likely this isn't about SME at all.
Check your bios settings. After power down bios activated power-saving features or HD power down.

This is something SME can't handle and so as you describe your system powers down and cannot revive itself on the Bios level.

Just press DEL to enter BIOS and deactivate both.

OK - I have gone into the BIOS and found that Energy Savings was set to 'Minimal' - I changed it to 'Disabled' which I hope will do the trick.

I thought that the BIOS setting changes might do the trick but yesterday I awoke to the same old situation.  It really does seem like it's in some sort of hibernation mode but I guess it could be one of the components goig haywire as well.

If it is in hibernation mode, what is the keystroke to re-activate?  I've tried moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard but got no response and pressing the power-on button on the font of the tower just turns it completely off.

As I understand it, if it was just in hibernation, pressing any key on the keyboard should bring it back up. But I don't think that SME has any support for this.

Since you have disabled the APM in the BIOS it is really looking like a hardware issue with either the Power supply or MB to me.
