Title: Installing SME server
Post by: TheKinG on November 04, 2004, 06:22:02 PM
Hi there,

I've got an old pc, built in a ATAPI cd-rom player and a extra NIC. This pc is clean, no OS installed. I created the bootdisk and burned the instal-cdrom. When i insert the boot disk (bios boot from A-drive 1st) and put the install cdrom, nothing happens. The cd-rom player is not recornised. Only when I start up with Windows startup diskette it can see the cd-rom player :-o ...
Can anybody tell me what to do, to install SME without even with a windows disk!!!

Thanx

The King

try to activate "boot from CDROM" in your BIOS.
then the PC should recognize the CD and boot from it.
the SME-install-CD is bootable.

cheers.

Hi There,

I did try that but my bios doesn't allow me to boot from cd-rom, maybe because it does not recornises the cd-rom?

Thanx!

Ok, for the record your hard drive dhould be primary master and CD should be secondary master.  That aside

You say windows can see the disk - this susggests that it isn't a hardware problem.

Try changing the configuration to that mentioned above and re-running setup.  If you find that the system still cannot see the cdrom I would be inclined to cheat and "borrow" the optical drive from your main PC to se  if that offers more success.

Hi,

You can also try to get an external USB-CDROM. E-smith/lycoris is one of that precious operating systems, that boot from external USB-Devices without any problems.

I do not even think of using floppies or CD-Roms in my servers, since i discovered that.

You might want to try burning the iso @ 8X

That should work.

Old drives think a 24x burn disk is blank.

Make sure you mark the burn speed on the disk.
