Title: upgrading 5.1.2 to 6.0.1
Post by: doumebzh on November 11, 2004, 12:41:45 PM
Hi,
I would like to upgrade my 5.1.2 to 6.0.1. But it's the first time i'll upgrade.
Can I upgrade directly to 6.0.1?
Sorry but I don't find such a howto.

Hi,

better not. First make a backup and then upgrade to the next version. Repeat every step to make sure you can 'go back one step'

Good luck

Boot partition size has changed between 5.1.2 (2.2 kernel) and 5.6 (2.4 kernel) from 15 Mb to 100Mb.
Upgrades will not resize it and you can run in to problem then new kernel will not fit.
I would recommend to do backup, fresh install and move the data back.

You can do it, but I'd recommend using Norton Ghost or some such to copy the drive first (resizing the boot partition to 100 MB ... good tip there!) then upgrade the copy first to 5.5, then to 5.6, then to 6.0.  That's your best shot.  Remove contribs added to the base 5.1.2 install before doing the upgrades.  Good luck!

it is not recommended many time to do an upgrade from 5.1.2 to 6.x.
many things have changed and you may get many problems.

save your data to somewhere and do a fresh install with 6.x.
