I upgraded from e-smith 4.1.2 to SME Server V5 on Friday. Now I get loads of the following messages. What do they mean and how do I stop them?

Subject: Cron /etc/startmail
fetchmail: couldn't time-check the run-control file
fetchmail: lock creation failed.
Thanks

I forgot to mention.... I am using multi-drop email retrieval.

I've seen the problem reported a few times, but I don't remember seeing a solution..I don't know for sure, but I have a guess. At some point between fetchmail 5.5.0 (which shipped with e-smith 4.1.2) and fetchmail 5.7.4 (which ships with SME v5), fetchmail was changed to check whether the .fetchmailrc file had been changed since the last poll. This would remove the requirement of stopping and restarting fetchmail when changes were made.
This is well and good, except that e-smith doesn't use a .fetchmailrc file, and I'm wondering if the lack of that file could be confusing fetchmail. Try doing "touch /root/.fetchmailrc" and see if that helps.

Thanks! I'll give that a try in about 3 hours time when I next manage to get my paws on that server.

No joy on that, I'm afraid! :( I tried entering "touch /root/.fetchmailrc" and nothing happened.
I tried "/etc/fetchmail" and nothing happened too. So in desperation, I tried "/etc/startmail" and got the same error message that I had originally.
Any further suggestions? :-)

I had the same problem as Laurence, so I followed his lead with the same results but with an added problem.
I now have no web services. When trying to reach the primary home page, I get no response from the server.
Any thoughts?

restarting httpd fixed problem but still no fetchmail.

Unfortunately there are a number of problems with fetchmail mail collection in SME V5. An update to correct these problems will be available soon.

I have the same problem when using multidrop
have another problem too, my e-smith manager navigation frame is only available when connection to :980 port, if I try connecting with the path /e-smith-manager I have an error 404 (not found)

This and other critical issues are fixed in SME Server Update 2. See
