Hi there!
I have installed sme 601 as priv. server and gateway over dialup (internal pci card). LAN works fine, pings are possible from everywhere inside the LAN. I also installed the cd-utils and clam-av (knudsen) addons.
I can acces http with workstations, download and use internet (writing this from workstation).
I cannot use https, pop, smtp or ftp from my workstation nore ping outside the LAN.
But I have testet ftp and ping from the server bash. it works.
So, somehow my packets from my workstation where stopped inside the server... but where?
I checked messages and havent found any maching denylogs. I have no custom templates.
Thanks for helping

Nobody an idea to solve this?
I can now exlude iptables. I flushed all chains and set the policy to accept. But no results on my https, pop and smpt problem.... So the problem should be elsewhere.
After reboot, iptables is restored.
perhaps it could be masquerading, but there my skills in special linux skill are far to poor...

I had a problem with one computer running xp sp2 and the firewall software. When it was enabled I wasn't able to use ftp from ie6. It had some proxy software installed for earthlink that didn't like the firewall.

I also encountered this problem once. The cause was an incorrect gateway setting on the clients. The reason I could still use http was because default IE is looking for a proxy server, finds one (squid on SME) and is able to access the internet.
Just type 'ipconfig' on the (Windows) command line and see what default gateway is returned. Is it the ip adres of your SME server? If not, correct this.

thanks for the answers!
firewall is not the problem because it works when workstations goes directly to the internet via modem. I also deactivated it once for testing.
Gateway and DNS settings are right (sme servers ip adress).
The problem is somewhere in the server I think.

ok, I made a COMPLETE REINSTALL of the whole server.
But....gess what...still the same problems. No https, ftp, ping, pop, smtp on this fresh and unmodified system for any workstation possible.
gateway settings are ok. http works without problems.
I am quite frustrated now.....

Hi there!
I have installed sme 601 as priv. server and gateway over dialup (internal pci card). LAN works fine,
Have you tried using it as just as a "server and gateway" and not priv. server and gateway?

I was having a similar experience. My problems with the new SME package are limited to VPN activities... but now you have me wondering if my issues are deeper. I was blaming it on the new "BellSouth" Netopia DSL modem. However, I had them come out and replace the modem and I still have the problem. Things were fine up til the time that I upgraded to the 6x version of SME Server. There must be some serious bugs in this new system. I also had the same response that you have had (NONE) from out here on the forum. I'm contemplating putting the old system back together and forgetting this nightmare for the time being. Question: Are you attempting to use VPN from outside your location? I'll be watching to see if you get any replies... sorry that this wasn't much help... just don't feel alone! :-?

You could try turning squid off.
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop squid Transparent no
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event remoteaccess-update

I am using SME now just as server. No gateway. For this purpose I buyed an cisco ISDN router. Now everything works fine:)
