Title: Setting up ADSL on SME 6
Post by: arrowsmith on December 03, 2004, 04:00:50 AM
Hi all,

The Telstra Exchange here is being activated shortly and i will be setting up serveral ADSL on SME servers.

Is there anything i need to watch out for???

and

Are there any better types of brands or different connections that are better and easier to connect to the SME server for???

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Avoid D-Link. I cannot stress that enough.

If you have the choice - go with Westnet. Excellent ISP.

If you plan on letting SME do all the authentication etc - then just go for a plain old boring single ethernet port modem that will do bridging (but not D-link ;-) - sorry, too many bad experiences and firmware upgrades)

There are no tricks at all with Australian ADSL providers, user name and password in the pppoe setup and you will be up and running in minutes

I use both Westnet(.com.au) and Eon - both are generally excellent.

I have standardised on Netgear stuff and have used lots of different models with Westnet with little or no probs.

My standard client setup is a DG834 in front of an SME6.x box with port forwarding on the router for just those ports required for the SME box to do its stuff.  Most of the crap is then handled by the router meaning the SME box has less security stuff to deal with; the router can also be set to drop ping requests.  Suggest you turn UPNP off as it is on by default.

This setup is also useful for creating a DMZ in between the two firewalls (if needed).

Contrary to a lot of what has been said on these forums this setup is solid, reliable (even PPTP VPN), and only marginally more complex to setup & use.

HTH

A good old Alcatel Speedtouch Pro works fine in bridging mode for me using iinet! cost me $80 on e-bay!
