If I have the files from mySQL, is there a way I can get into them and get the data even if the machine has failed?

Just put the files in the directory of a working machine, stop mysql first, take care of the ownership of the files. I don't know if that machine has to be the same type, if not you could install mysql on windows and use that mysql.
