Title: Without Video !
Post by: Shoaib on December 19, 2004, 01:59:15 PM
Hi all,
I'm new here and very new to SME. Just downloaded and installed it on a machine. I have plans to make it the official mail server of my organisation. As I'm getting to know this software( very good one indeed) I have a few questions. The most important currently is that can I run my SME server without a video card. As I would be doing most of my administration through putty, winscp and web, so I was planning to run it without a monitor and without a vga card :)

I ran mine for a while without a video card when i had to lend one to a friend.

And i never have a monitor plugged in.

In emergencies you may need a video card to access the console or configuration settings, otherwise, go for it.

But why?  Run without a monitor, mouse, keyboard, certainly.  But with an old PCI or even ISA card in there (assuming your server even has the latter) if you have a problem you can simply plug in a monitor and hit the reset button to see what's happening instead of having to open the machine first thing.

I guess you could try it even though I personally fail to see the usefulness.  Will your hardware even POST/boot without a video card?  I know that none of my servers or workstations will.  If I was in your shoes, I'd use a video card (whatever is cheapest and/or laying around) and just not hook up a monitor.

First of all, thanks for all of your replies. Second the reason why I want to run it without a video card is coz this a new machine which came with a Geforce FX 5700, so I don't want that to go to waste :-D I've looked in the bios, and it can boot without a vga card if I select halt on nothing. But the point that I might need to go to console in emergencies makes me think to plug in a old oci card in case something happens...Oh well I'll be going to get it running. See ya all later. Once again thankx :)
